In Wisconsin, planting in fall while the soil is still warm gives their root systems a chance to establish while not wasting energy. While you will still need to water and attend to newly planted items, their water needs will be significantly less than what is needed during the summer. Many nurseries also have stock on sale. Be sure, however, to look for strong, healthy plants and mulch over the root system after planting.
Lawn Seeding and Sod Installation
Fall is ideal for lawn seeding and sod installation for the same reason as described above: warm soil temperatures and cooler days and nights allow root systems to establish quickly without copious amounts of water. Be sure to keep seed/sod moist until established. Thanks to cooler temps, you should be able to wait longer between waterings.
